-- No sand dune is too high and no terrain is too rocky for the Namibian police in the Long Beach and Walvis Bay area this festive season, thanks to law enforcement officers on patrol with four Legal Shield-branded quad bikes. The patrols already commenced last Wednesday and will last till 16 January, when most of the holiday activities have ended.
The police and Legal Shield are cooperating for a safer and crime free festive season since 2006, after the company purchased four quad bikes in that year for officers to conduct patrols of the dunes, the urban areas and the beaches between Walvis Bay and Long Beach. This win-win relationship is maintained through Legal Shield's standing commitment to keep the bikes in a tip-top condition.
In the past these patrols have ensured that people disregarding traffic safety, those who don't stay in designated off-road driving areas and fishermen disregarding angling regulations on the beaches brought to account. The quad bikes also make it possible for police personnel and even paramedics to reach injured people in the off-road areas faster, in the event of accidents.
To mark the anniversary of this leading joint-venture between Legal Shield and the Namibian police, a function takes place in the beginning of each December at the Legal Shield branch in Walvis Bay, where law enforcement stakeholders, Legal Shield staff and the town's local authority leadership take account of what needs to be done for a safer festive season.
Walvis Bay deputy mayor Benson Uakumbua was the guest of honour at the function last Thursday where he remarked that holidays often have a less enjoyable side, as this is the time when criminal elements are taking advantage of people letting their guard down as they relax and spend time with family and friends.
Uakumbua said the police need to be extra alert during these times to fight crime and the quad bikes patrolling off road areas would be a valuable tool in the process. "Given our terrain of dunes around Walvis Bay, the officers need specialised vehicles to patrol as a deterrent for criminal activities or pursue wanted suspects fleeing into the dunes and other hard to reach areas", he said.
