THE war against violation of traffic laws in Lagos State got a boost two weeks ago when members of the Nigerian Armed Forces arrested six persons including a police corporal for driving against the traffic, otherwise known as one-way.
This came just at the Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) impounded seven vehicles with outdated vehicle documents.
Parading the traffic offenders at the Nigerian Army Cantonment in Ikeja, Capt. Andrew Malgwi, Intelligence Officer, Ninth Brigade, Lagos said the arrest was carried out by the special security outfit codenamed 'Operation Mesa' after receiving an order from the state governor whose convoy was driving past when the offence was committed late Sunday. It would be recalled that Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State had earlier ordered a similar arrest of a motorcyclist recently for riding against the traffic on the third Mainland Bridge.
Explaining how the suspects were arrested, Malgwi said "At about 9pm that night, these six men were arrested by our men in 'OP Mesa' for driving against traffic.
They were actually arrested around the Cappa traffic light along Agege Motor road on the suspicion that they were criminals because of the way they were driving against the traffic at night in full speed.

The six traffic offenders arrested by the Joint Military Task Force, OP MESSA, being paraded by the Nigeria Army at the Headquarters 9 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Ikeja Cantonment for driving against the traffic along Agege Motor Road, Oshodi, recently.
By their action, they have breached the state`s traffic rules and OP Mesa, with a mandate to fight criminality in whatever form, will ensure the men face the necessary actions."
He gave the names of the six suspects as Michael Ameh, Henry Ameh, Nicholas Danladi, Augustine Ameh, Austin Osunsakin, and Nicholas Odeh, a police corporal. Malgwi stated that the men would be handed over to the police for further interrogation and prosecution.
Also speaking, Brigadier General Sanusi Muazu, Commander of Ninth Brigade, Nigeria Army, Lagos, said the arrest of the men was in line with OP Mesa's commitment to ensuring that the laws of the state were obeyed and that criminality in any form was confronted. He urged residents to be law abiding and shun criminal acts, saying the army would continue to complement government's efforts in ensuring that the state was safe for all citizens.
Responding on behalf of the suspects after the parade, Michael Ameh said they acted in ignorance of the state traffic rules. "I actually committed the offence out of ignorance because I am not familiar with the road as a new comer in Lagos. My cousin, Nicholas, the owner of the vehicle had called to inform me that he sustained some injuries as a result of an accident and that he would need me to take him to the hospital.
I got the other people informed and we traced him to the scene. It was while we were taken him to the hospital that we were rounded up by security operatives."
